Trip Things and Tasks

Taking a trip consists of two main things:

  1. The things you do daily that now have to be done in a different place.
  2. The thing you are taking the trip for.

Phase 0:

  1. grab a piece of paper and write down all the things you will need to grab at the last minute.
  2. count the number of bags you will be taking. Write this down as well. It will be important when you are leaving.

Phase 1: Pre-Departure & Digital Admin

  • Virtual Properties: Manage online tasks like daily Go games (e.g., Online-Go) and online business upkeep.
  • Subscriptions & Autoships: Pause, cancel, or forward items coming to your current address.
  • Non-cloud configurations: eg. my tab configuration in each chrome profile is not in the cloud, so I must manually export it.
  • Mail & Autoresponder: Set up mail forwarding and activate your vacation autoresponder.
  • Home Shutdown: Turn off electricity and alarms, and clear out the fridge, bathroom, and bedroom.

Phase 2: Purpose & Daily Routine Integration

  • Trip Purpose: Visualize yourself at your event dressed completely from head to toe (including dress shoes) and pack specific event items or daily speech/presentation needs.
  • Daily Routines: Account for items needed for habits like yoga (mat and exercise gear), guitar practice, and Spanish study.

Phase 3: Packing Categories

  • Deep Essentials: Wallet, keys, cell phone, phone charger, contact lenses, eyeglasses, specialized health equipment (hearing/breathing aids), and valid identification (passport, driver’s license, conference pass).
  • Electronics: Bluetooth devices, headphones, laptop with power supply, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Clothing & Gear: Underwear, socks, shoes, pajamas, bathrobe, pants, shorts, shirts, laundry bag, and a dirty clothes hamper.
  • Weather-Specific: Warm hats, long underwear, or other climate-appropriate gear for your destination.
  • Hygiene & Health: Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, facecloths, nutritional supplements, and a moxibustion device.
  • Optional Items: Sleeping bag, food, secondary hobby gear (neureka, books).

Phase 4: On Your Way Out the Door

  • Last-Minute Grabs: Laptop (plus a second charger kept in the car), phone, phone charger from the bedside, 2 comforters, toiletries bag, suitcase, and daily carry items like your guitar. GRAB ALL THE THINGS YOU WROTE ABOUT in PHASE 0 !!!!
  • Final Check: Check your pockets, load the suitcase into the vehicle, and jet!
